⚔️ The Hybrid Combat System

Beast of Reincarnation features one of the most innovative combat systems in modern RPGs: Emma fights in real-time action with her katana, while Koo operates on a turn-based command system. You control both simultaneously — a true "one-person, one-dog" experience.

Emma's Real-Time Combat

Emma's combat is fast and fluid. Basic attacks chain into skills and finishers with on-screen button prompts. The system is designed to be accessible: even if you miss a prompt, combat continues smoothly.

  • Light Attack: Quick katana slashes. Builds minimal Down Gauge but safe to use.
  • Heavy Attack / Finisher: Prompts appear when enemies are vulnerable. Deals massive Down Gauge damage.
  • Bloom Arts: Emma's special techniques. Activated manually when FP is available. These are fight-changing moves.
  • Ranged Weapons: Switch to bow or other ranged weapons for flying enemies. Auto-aim available in options.

The Down Gauge

Every enemy has a yellow Down Gauge below their health bar. Deplete it through attacks and perfect parries to trigger a takedown — a high-damage finishing sequence. Managing the Down Gauge is the core combat loop.

💡 Pro Tip

Perfect parries are the fastest way to drain the Down Gauge. A single well-timed parry is worth more than 5-6 normal attacks.

🛡️ Parry & Perfect Dodge

Perfect Parry (Precision Guard)

Time your guard just before an attack lands to execute a Perfect Parry. Benefits:

  • Restores FP — Emma's resource for stronger techniques
  • Charges Bloom Gauge — Koo's ability resource
  • Massive Down Gauge damage to the enemy
  • Staggers smaller enemies, opening them for combos

The parry window is generous on Normal difficulty. If you're new to action games, start practicing parries on the early Malefacts in the tutorial area — their attack patterns are slow and telegraphed.

Perfect Dodge

Dodge at the last moment for a Perfect Dodge. This triggers a brief slow-motion effect and leaves the enemy open for counterattacks. Use Perfect Dodge against unblockable attacks (red flash indicator).

⚠️ Watch For

Not all attacks can be parried. Red-flashing attacks must be dodged. Some boss attacks have multiple hitboxes — parry the first hit and you'll still need to dodge follow-ups.

🐶 Koo — Your Blighted Companion

Koo is not a passive AI companion. You actively command Koo's abilities through a tactical menu that slows down time (similar to FF7 Remake's menu), letting you select skills strategically without pressure.

Bloom Gauge

Koo's abilities consume the Bloom Gauge (綻放值), which is primarily charged by Emma's perfect parries. This creates a natural synergy: parry with Emma → charge Koo → unleash Koo abilities → create openings for Emma.

Koo Ability Types

  • Offensive: Direct damage, elemental attacks targeting enemy weaknesses
  • Debuff: Weaken enemy defenses, break shields, slow movement
  • Buff: Boost Emma's attack, defense, or FP generation
  • Control: Bind enemies, area-of-effect stuns, create safe zones
  • Heal/Support: Restore HP, cleanse status effects

QTE Bonus

After issuing a Koo command, a quick QTE appears. Succeed to restore some of Emma's HP. Failing the QTE does not cancel Koo's ability — it's a bonus, not a requirement. Always use Koo's abilities freely.

📈 Attributes & Leveling

Beast of Reincarnation uses three primary attributes. Each level-up grants points you allocate freely. Your attribute distribution also unlocks new skills on the skill tree.

AttributeEffectUnlocksRecommended For
Strength (力量) Increases katana damage & physical attack power Offensive skills, heavy finishers Aggressive playstyles, DPS builds
Stamina (体力) Increases max HP, defense, stagger resistance Defensive skills, HP passives Beginners, survival builds
Bloom (綻放) Increases FP pool, Bloom Gauge capacity, skill potency Bloom Arts, Koo abilities Hybrid/skill-focused builds
✅ Beginner Recommendation

Start with a 2:2:1 ratio (Strength/Stamina/Bloom) for the first 10 levels. This gives you survivability while unlocking basic skills across all trees. Respecialize later once you know your preferred playstyle.

🌟 Emma & Koo Skill Trees

Emma and Koo have separate, massive skill trees with independent skill points. You never have to choose between upgrading Emma or Koo — they progress independently.

Emma's Skill Tree

  • Sword Techniques: New combo finishers, charged attacks, aerial moves
  • Bloom Arts: Devastating special moves unlocked by defeating Nushi bosses
  • Parry/Dodge: Extended parry windows, counter-attack bonuses, dodge upgrades
  • Traversal: Blighted Hair upgrades for exploration — longer reach, faster grapple
  • Passives: Increased damage, FP recovery, status resistance

Koo's Skill Tree

  • Bloom Abilities: New commands — elemental attacks, crowd control, healing
  • Synergy Skills: Combination attacks that chain with Emma's moves
  • Support Passives: Auto-heal, shared buffs, extended Bloom Gauge
💡 Key Insight

Defeating Nushi bosses unlocks new skills for both Emma and Koo. The harder the boss, the more powerful the unlocks. Don't skip optional bosses!

🏠 Camps & Resting

Camps serve as your safe havens throughout the Blighted world. At any camp you can:

  • Rest: Fully restore HP, FP, and consumables
  • Level Up: Allocate attribute points and skill points
  • Learn Skills: Unlock new abilities on both skill trees
  • Fast Travel: Warp to any previously discovered camp
  • Equipment: Change weapons, armor, and Koo's talisman

Camps are generously placed — you'll usually find one before and after major encounters. Resting respawns normal enemies but not bosses.

🌳 Exploration & Blighted Hair Traversal

Emma's Blighted Hair (污髮) is both a curse and a tool. These vine-like extensions allow unique traversal:

  • Grapple Points: Target glowing nodes to swing across gaps or reach high ledges
  • Bridges: Extend hair horizontally to create makeshift bridges
  • Vertical Ascent: Lift yourself up walls and cliffs
  • Combat Grapple: Some bosses allow hair-grappling to reach weak points

Exploration is highly encouraged. Hidden chests, spirit stones, and secret areas are scattered throughout every Blighted Forest. Look for visual cues: glowing plants, broken structures, and high vantage points.
